Scholarships

Thanks to our sponsors, the following support for participants of the European Summer University in Digital Humanities is available. Please note: you can only apply for one scholarship / bursary / fellowship. Please note, furthermore, that the selection committee will decide on the basis of the quality of your application letter.

1) Funding granted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) allows us to award up to 23 scholarships to alumni / alumnae of German universities. Alumni / Alumnae are people from outside Germany who as (Erasmus) students, graduates, researchers or lecturers have received a degree at a German University or have studied, conducted research or worked at a German University at least for three months and who are now outside of Germany. Scholarships cover the costs of travel, accommodation (12 nights) and meals (11 days). Accommodation will be reserved by us. The scholarships do not cover participation fees.

To apply for a DAAD-Scholarship, a well written application (500-700 words) in German or English has to be submitted as a file via ConfTool. Evidence of the time(s) spent at German universities needs to be provided. Scholarships are attributed only once the applicant has registered for the Summer University and paid her / his participation fees.

2) The University of Leipzig through its International Centre is generously offering:

(a) bursaries for participants coming from its Eastern European partner universities:

Bursaries consist of a daily allowance of € 33,00 for students, of € 38,00 for graduates, of € 54,00 for doctoral students and € 80,00 for members of the scientific staff (postdoc researcher, faculty lecturer, adjunct / associate / assistent / full professor). Bursaries are attributed only once the applicant has registered for the Summer University and paid her / his participation fees. Bursaries will be handed out during the second week of the Summer University.

To apply for a bursary a well written application (500-700 words) in German or English has to be submitted as a file via ConfTool, including a short statement on your research interest and the reason why you apply for the fellowship. Applicants also need to prove their affiliation to one of the Eastern European partner universities listed above as well as their status.

(b) if means allow 1-2 bursaries for members of the scientific staff (postdoc researcher, faculty lecturer, adjunct / associate / assistant / full professor) from one of its non-European partner universities. The bursaries consist of a daily allowance of € 80,00. Bursaries are attributed only once the applicant has registered for the Summer University and paid her / his participation fees. Bursaries will be handed out during the second week of the Summer University.

To apply for a bursary a well written application (500-700 words) in German or English has to be submitted as a file via ConfTool, including a short statement on your research interest and the reason why you apply for the fellowship. Applicants also need to prove their affiliation to one of the non-European partner universities of the University of Leipzig as well as their status.

(c) Erasmus + 107 Scholarships may be available for people who are employedat the following universities during the time the Sommer University takes place:

  • Israel: The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, University Bar Ilan
  • Ukraine: Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University

If means allow Erasmus + 107 Scholarship may be available also for people who are employed at the following universities:

  • Australien: Macquarie University
  • China: Shanghai, Peking
  • Indonesia: Yogyakarta, Surakarta
  • Russia: Kaliningrad, Kasan, Moskau, St. Petersburg
  • Southafrica: Stellenbosch
  • USA: Durham, Athens, Tucson, Santa Barbara
  • or at a university in New Zealand

Should you be interested in applying for an Erasmus + scholarship, please write a mail, asap, to Elena Arestau or Rebecca Sierig <esu_ct@uni-leipzig.de> with the subject line „ESU 2020: Erasmus + Scholarships“. Tell Elena or Rebecca the name of your university and that you would like to know whether you could apply for one of the Erasmus + scholarships.

If you are elegible for an Erasmus + scholarship you need to submit a well written application (500-700 words) in German or English, including a short statement on your research interest and the reason why you apply for the scholarship, as a file via ConfTool and start the process which will be communicated to you by Elena or Rebecca.

Erasmus + scholarships are attributed only once the applicant has registered for the Summer School and paid her / his participation fees. Bursaries will be handed out during the second week of the Summer University.

People coming from EU-Partner Countries may be able to apply for an Erasmus + scholarship (Key Action 103) at their own university. Please get informed.

3) Thanks to the generous support DARIAH-EU grants the European Summer University in Digital Humanities, about 10 tuition fellowships can be attributed to (doctoral) students and young scholars who are not members of Leipzig University. The fellowships cover the participation fees. Winners of such a fellowship need to write a report about the European Summer University and the experiences they gathered during the event, illustrate it with pictures of the event and send it to DARIAH-EU in electronic form no later than three weeks after the end of the Summer University. The text and the pictures will be published on the DARIAH-EU website and promoted through social media channels. To apply for a DARIAH-EU fellowship, a well written application (500-700 words) in English, including a short statement on your research interests and information on your status (student, young scholar, …), your university affiliation and the reason why you apply for the fellowship, has to be submitted as a file via ConfTool. The selection of the fellows is done by a committee consisting of DARIAH-EU representatives and members of ESU’s Scientific Committee. Preference will be given to applicants (in the following order) from 1) Eastern European Countries, including Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia); 2) Southeastern European Countries, including Greece, Turkey and Cyprus; 3) Central European Countries; 4) other (European) Countries. Only applications by registered participants are considered.
